Did you know kids laugh an average of 200 times every day? Compare this to the typical adult who laughs no more than 18 times a day. Kids naturally love to laugh and they have a greater sense of humor in many ways than adults. This sense of humor brings greater optimism, happiness and self esteem and children with a fun sense of humor are usually better able to handle the stresses of childhood, from a big move to teasing at school.

So, how can you help your child develop their own sense of humor and learn to laugh? Here are some fun ideas to try, depending on your child's age, from jokes for kids to playing dress-up.

A Baby's Sense of Humor
Babies don't truly have a sense of humor yet, although they do enjoy to see you laugh and smile. If you make a funny sound or a humorous face and smile, your baby will naturally sense your happiness and imitate it. At this age, children also respond well to tickling and raspberries on the tummy. Around 9 to 15 months, your baby will now understand that the unexpected is funny, such as dad putting a diaper on his head.

Physical Humor for Toddlers
Toddlers ...
... love physical humor, particularly when it's combined with surprise. Around this time, your toddler will start to enjoy funny rhymes and words as they develop language skills and they will also have a good time trying to make you laugh. Encourage this play with dress up in mom or dad's shoes.

Preschoolers Love Incongruity
Once your child reaches the preschool years, they'll start to enjoy funny pictures with incongruity, such as a truck with square wheels or a zebra wearing boxers. Of course, preschoolers also develop a delightful sense of humor in the form of bathroom jokes at this age. If it seems gross, chances are it will have your preschooler rolling on the floor.

Jokes for Kids in School
Once your child reaches 8, they'll start to enjoy exaggeration and jokes. Many jokes for kids can be repeated over and over with the same reaction. As the age, they will learn how to use words to create riddles and puns and even making fun of anything they decide isn't typical, whether it's the way someone dresses or funny behavior.

To help older children develop their language skills and sense of humor, try buying a fun book of jokes for kids that they can try on friends and family. Here are examples of jokes a school-aged children will love to share:

What do you call a pig that knows karate?
A pork chop!

What did zero say to eight?
Nice belt!

Why do cows wear bells?
Because their horns don't work!

Knock, knock.
Who's there?
Owls say.
Owls say who?
Yep.

Laughter and comedy is a natural part of childhood and helps your kids develop their sense of self. Help your child develop a great sense of humor that will stay with them through adulthood with play time, dress up, jokes and wackiness every day!
