Sri Lanka cricket team’s triumphant victory over the Australians in the second Twenty-twenty at the MCG, met with an unexpected turn of events. There were no jubilant celebrations; instead it was a riot at the cricket pitch with both the teams’ players clashing against each other. The Australian cricket team and the Sri Lankan cricket team had to be physically separated by authorities and snapped out from what can only be described as a blatant display of puerile behavior by fully grown adults, representing their respective countries in an event watched by the whole world. Australia lost the series two to zilch. The Sri Lankans scored 4-161 while the Aussies finished with a 3-119.

The cause of the problem was the verbal exchange between two players of opposite teams- Glenn Maxwell and Mahela Jayawardene. Here is a third person account of what originally went down in the cricket field. Before bowling the final ball, the Sri Lankans had gathered around Thisara Perera offering their two cents’ worth. This prompted an irate Maxwell to scream at the gathered party to finish the game. After Glenn Maxwell had the missed ...
... the final ball and the game ended with Australia three runs short of victory, the loss of the game sunk into a Maxwell and the frustration at being challenged seeped into Jayawardene. The bottled emotions and tensions just culminated into a heated argument between the two players which resulted in more players entering the scenes in support of their own and from there it just turned into a full on brawl.

The Australian team’s frustration at not having won a single twenty20 since February 2010 was quite evident in their restlessness and truculent nature. The captains of the Australian and Sri Lankan team were asked to comment on the squabble. Both the captains decided to play it safe by feigning ignorance at what transpired after the final ball and blamed the tension and eruption on the passion of the game.

Mahela Jayawardene profile has seen a number of fights in its time. He is quite hot blooded in nature and quick to react to uncompromising situations. Just last year he was fined nearly ten percent of his entire match fee for picking a fight with the umpires during the final of the CB Series in Adelaide. A case was taken up against him, along the lines of dissention at an umpire’s decision, to which he cooperatively pleaded guilty.
