Synthetics, Blends Or Purely Mineral? Which Car Engine Oil To Use?

When it is time to change the engine oil the choice of brands and types of oils can confuse you. Should you go in for purely synthetic oil, for blends or opt for the cheapest mineral-based oil? The safe way is to stick to the grade and viscosity of oil recommended by the car manufacturer. Synthetic oils are better in as much as they do not degrade over time and deliver superior performance in terms of lubrication, conducting heat away, keeping parts clean and contributing to better performance.
Engine oil cars need to run efficiently and deliver performance can be synthetic, blended or mineral based. Synthetic oils are made of ester groups and polyalphaolefins, retaining their properties for extended durations. These are free flowing, withstand high temperature and reduce friction as well as fuel consumption. Most major brands such as Castrol, Shell and Mobil offer a range of synthetic engine oils besides regular oils. Mobil engine oils are available in synthetic grades and you can pick the recommended grade or even a lighter grade with the assurance ...
... that the next oil change is about 10000 km away. Mineral oils are derived from petroleum and like synthetic oils, have additives to prevent rust, clean engine parts, reduce friction and maintain viscosity. Blends fall in between and are affordably priced yet high performing types. Mineral oils cost the least but you may have to replace oil every 3000 kilometres. Synthetics are expensive. If your usage pattern is normal and you take good care of your car then you could safely use mineral oil. In fact, if you have an older model car, mineral based oils are much better. Synthetics come into their own in today’s high RPM, high performance engines. If you live in an area where the temperatures are low you could pick a lighter 0W30 or 5W 30 grade synthetic oil, for example, to ensure better cold starts but make sure to check your car’s manual. Conversely, high temperatures and heavy loads dictate the use of more viscous grades such as 15W30 or 20W50.
When it comes to oils and lubricants for cars, people tend to give the matter only passing thought. However, you can ensure better life and performance by checking the oil level and physically checking for the level of contamination. Engine oils tend to degrade with soot and combustion products as well as dirt and metal contaminating the oil. If you check on a regular basis, top up the oil or replace it if it seems too thick, sludgy or dirty, you are assured of better performance and longer life, even if you use standard oils. The best engine oil cars need is the one that carries out its functions and it is up to you to check its condition and level.
As you can see oils and lubricants play a significant role in performance and life of your vehicle. The right source is an online supplier who stocks all major brands and gives free guidance following it up by rushing the oil to your doorstep at wholesale rates.
