Dirndl Costumes – Accentuating Your Style
Every celebration holds its own significance. Different folk costumes are designed to be worn for formal occasions or celebrations. Similarly, a dirndl is the costume usually worn by the people of Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein for their celebrations. A dirndl costume comprises of a bodice, blouse, full skirt and apron.
“Dirndl” word originally came from the southern Germany, but in the regional accent it meant a young girl. In 18th century, it was the uniform for the housemaids in Austria. Dirndl was derived from Dirndlgewand which means “maid’s dress”. It can be referred to a young girl or the dress which she wears. It also holds a traditional significance; it was worn as a work outfit by the females belonging to the peasant class. Farm girls, dairymaids, farmer's wives, and housewives used to wear dirndl for their jobs. Each locality has its own style or top to identify the area which the wearer belongs to. Dirndls, Landhausmode, Lederhosen, and the other traditional dresses can be easily found all over the internet and show off the colors, tops and embroideries from different geographical locations.

They can be plain or can have elaborated patterns with embroideries or without embroideries. In many areas, ladies use accessories like a shawl or scarf with their dirndls. For winter, dirndls are designed with long sleeves, made of heavy weight materials like wool featuring dark and rich colors. On the other hand for summer use, dirndls are made so lightweight with the cotton fabric with short sleeves and bright colors. During summer's time, ladies wearing the dirndls often go shoeless. This dress holds other traditional significance as well like if there is a knot on the apron, it indicates that women are married. It depends, whether the knot is on left or right side, both shows different status. If the knot is on the right side of the apron, it means that the woman is married, engaged or committed while a knot on the left side indicates that she is single. And if the knot is at the back side, it means she is a widow. But the apron which was a practical outfit used for different sort of activities like storing scissors or gathering berries etc., has now become a fun accessory.
Dirndls are made for flattering ladies, having a tight waist and bodice in order to emphasize their figure and a full length skirt for covering flaws. In modern time, dirndl holds the similar significance as kilt that shows the national pride of the wearer. These dresses worked for the traditional or cultural events, weddings or any formal occasion. Today they are known due to their appearance at Oktoberfest, a grand festival that is celebrated in southern Germany which attracts people from all over world. Add a dirndl to your collection of modern pieces. It is art of wearable that looks simply great and entice every woman, whether she is shorter or taller, from slim to larger frames.
