A detergent is a surfactant or a mixture of surfactants with cleaning properties in dilute solutions. Generally, these are water-soluble surface-active agents comprised of a hydrophobic portion, usually a long alkyl chain, attached to hydrophilic or water solubility enhancing functional groups.
