The Oldest World Number One In Tennis - Serena Williams
She is arguably one of the best tennis players in the world, taking into consideration not just the female tennis players but also their more robust counterparts. She is better known as the other half of the famous ‘Williams sisters’. She is the perfect embodiment of raw potential and unbridled energy. She is as powerful as she is graceful and that alone speaks volumes about her skills on the field. She is one of the names that come to your mind when you hear about tennis. This particular tennis phenom that has taken the world by storm is Serena Williams.
Serena’s tennis journey has been marked by intermittent milestones of various plaudits and records. She has structured and re-structured numerous records like no other in the tennis field. To begin with, she has thirty Grand slam titles to her credit, fifteen of which she won in single, thirteen in women’s doubles and two in mixed doubles. She is the fifth woman tennis player to hold four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously for two years in a row. Of the many grand slam titles that she has amassed over the years, thirteen of them were won while in a partnership ...
... with her sister. The combined effect of the duo is truly a force to reckon with. They are almost unbeatable at the grand slam finals.
Apart from the Grand Slam titles and Roland Garros, she has also secured three Women’s Tennis Association Tour Championships. Another important highlight of her career happens to be the four Olympic gold medals that Serena Williams won for her impressive performances. She won one in the Women’s singles division while the rest was won in Women’s doubles. Her achievements are not just for individual satisfaction and for the sake of winning. These victories contribute to an improved confidence, ego, lifestyle and a lot more as they amount to nearly forty million dollars in prize money alone without factoring in gracious national incentives.
A person of Serena William profile deserves to be promoted to the top and remain there. And that is just what happened on five separate occasions when she was ranked World Number one. She was declared numero uno for the first time on July 8, 2002. She is just one win away from her being deemed the oldest World number one. The Qatar Open finals will determine who will reign supreme amongst Serena, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova.
