There Is More To Diesel Engine Car Oil Than Meets The Eye
If you had a petrol car and then switched to a high fuel efficiency modern diesel engine car, you may wonder whether to continue using the old petrol engine oils or use only specified diesel engine car oils.
As in patrol cars you can use mineral oils, a blended mix or purely synthetic diesel engine car oil provided it matches the recommended viscosity and grade specified by the car manufacturer. Diesel generates more soot and sludge and diesel engine car oils have special additives that prevent deposition of soot and sludge in the engines. Diesel engine oils are also more viscous to form a film between metal surfaces and thus prevent wear and tear. If you have older cars then you may have to consider using oils that will suit those older engines. For instance, modern diesel engine cars may have a particulate filter and a catalytic converter and will therefore need oil to suit. Older engines do not operate at the same high temperatures and pressure as modern diesel cars develop. If your diesel car is a turbo type then again you may want to look at specific oils meant for these cars. At high temperatures and pressures, ...
... normal oils will break down and may oxidize and lose their lubrication properties. Substituting high performance synthetic diesel engine car oil with cheap car engine oil is simply not advisable. You save only a little but surely your engine will need costly repairs sooner than it should and will never perform as expected.
After 2007 the scenario has changed drastically with oils no longer being compatible and ill considered choices often leading to damage and expensive repairs. In the current scenario with so many Japanese, American and European diesel cars running on the roads, one size does not fit all and a car owner may be confused. Happily, car manufacturers have given recommendations on the diesel engine car oil to use. A car owner has only to refer to the manual to know the precise diesel engine oil to use. You can get away with substitution if you know details of your car’s engine and characteristics and compatible brands available in the markets. You could upgrade the recommended oil and use fully synthetic oil with the right mix of additives to give the same or improved performance with longer times between oil changes.
When it is time for an oil change, stick to the same brand. If you wish to look at other brands or types, your best shortcut is to go online, select a known reputed online oil dealer and get his views. Usually top online oil dealers have experts on their staff to help you select the best oil for your car. Buy motor oil online at wholesale prices and also get the benefit of free advice. If you were to try and phone your car manufacturer, chances are you may not get the right answer so promptly.
