Your H1 bulb headlamps are among the most important safety features of your car because they directly affect how well you see the road and how easily other drivers can see you, especially when driving at night or through poor weather. If they’re not working properly, your vehicle could fail its next MOT inspection.

Quick MOT Lighting Checklist

• Both H1 bulbs match in colour (white or yellow only)
• Colour temperature within legal limits (Halogen ≤ 4300K, HID ≤ 8000K)
• Beams properly aligned
• No blown, dim, or flickering bulbs
• No condensation in headlight casing
• Headlight covers are clear, not foggy
• Bulbs are secure and firmly fitted
• All lights (indicators, brakes, fog) work

MOT headlight regulations you should know

Did you know that almost 1.4 million UK motorists failed their MOT last year due to problematic lamps and reflectors? Be sure to check your H1 bulbs regularly for the following issues to increase your chances of passing your MOT inspection:

Colour temperature limits

Your headlights must turn on instantly ...
... and emit either white or yellow light. Both bulbs must match — if one is white and the other is yellow, your car will fail the MOT. Any other colour is not allowed and will result in an automatic fail.

You should also make sure that your bulbs aren’t too bright or tinted beyond legal limits. As a guide:

• Xenon HID bulbs must not exceed 8000K.
• Halogen bulbs must not exceed 4300K.

Are you installing new bulbs? Always check the manufacturer’s colour temperature specifications before buying.

Beam alignment

If your headlights are misaligned — even slightly — your car will automatically fail the test.

During the MOT, inspectors check the alignment of all dipped beam headlamps. They want to make sure that the top edge of the beam is correctly positioned and that any visible 'peak' falls within the approved tolerance zone.

If you’re visiting the UK with a car from abroad, you can apply beam converter kits or headlight masks to the right-hand dip headlights. Just make sure they fully block the upward beam kick to the right, which would otherwise dazzle oncoming drivers.

Spot faulty or dimming H1 bulbs before an MOT inspection
Lighting-related issues account for nearly 30% of MOT failures, and about one in five cars has a lighting defect such as a blown bulb. Before your inspection, check the following on every H1 bulb:

• All indicators, brake lights, and fog lights work properly.
• Lights are bright enough and emit a legal colour (white or warm white, or even white with a faint blue tinge).
• There’s no moisture buildup inside the casing. If you notice condensation, reseal the unit to keep it waterproof.
• Headlight casings are clear, not cloudy or fogged.
• Each bulb is securely fitted and does not move when touched.
