Without a doubt, oil and gas jobs are one of the best ways to get into an exciting career that is at the cutting edge of human pioneering. In the past, prospecting for natural, non-renewable resources such as oil, natural gas and tar sands was an extremely dangerous job. As science and technology improved exponentially with the full force of Moore's Law behind it, ideas from a cross-section of disciplines enriched and enhanced the efficiency and lucrativeness of gas and oil jobs. Scientific principles and ideas from physics, earth sciences, oceanography, biology and even astronomy have contributed immensely to the development of technologies.

Background and Requirements for Oil & Gas Jobs

As such, if you are interested in a career in oil and gas then the starting point should naturally be a university-level certification in a science or technology subject. Students leaving high school generally have two options to get into an oil and gas industry career:
- they can do a shorter, more practical course that will get them into a technician or manual role
- they can take a university four-year degree ...
... in a science or technology subject and then seek employment with an industry representative

Career Prospects in Oil and Gas

Oil and gas recruitment can lead to a very challenging, lifelong career. There are many different jobs available in this industry that are based in locations all over the world. Jobs are available in urban, rural and even highly remote areas. The best way to understand the full scope of careers in the oil and gas industry is to have a bit of an insight into how the whole process works.

1) Generally, prospectors, surveyors, explorers, divers and other professionals will seek out, find and lay claim to natural resources for their employers. As such, there are many paths available to professionals who would enjoy working in remote areas in environments such as oil rigs, ships on the high seas, survey air plane cockpits and even mountainous areas.

2) Once the natural resource is located, an extraction site will need to be constructed, which brings in professionals in the construction, transportation, logistics, raw materials, legal and administrative departments.

3) Once the extraction site is completed, then the professional staff comes in who actually does the drilling, mining, processing and refining of the oil or gas that is being extracted.

Oil and Gas Jobs Time Requirements

As mentioned above, the time required to get into an oil and gas career depends entirely on the actual profession you wish to practice within the industry. If you are going for a more technical, practical, or manual job, such as a surveyor, oil-rigger, driller, or ship captain, then you will probably not need to study more than a few years.

However, if you are interested in becoming involved with the development of new technologies, scientific research and analysis and generally a more senior role within the industry, then a four-year university degree would serve you better. In some situations, post-graduate studies such as a Master's or a PhD may even be required, especially if you wish to get into research and development.

The basic subjects that will help you immensely, regardless of which oil jobs you decide to go for, are physics, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computing science. Any variation or related subject will most likely be highly favoured by any potential employers.

Additionally, you can gain valuable work experience in this industry by starting out in an internship or in a corporate-funded scientific research project.
