And immunoglobulin by any other name would be just as effective. It would also be called an antibody, as it's more commonly known. Immunoglobulins work to identify and attack foreign substances known as antigens. Common antigens include bacteria and viruses, and they can also include fungi, pet dander, pollution, and just about any other un-welcome invader trying to wreak havoc on your health and well being.

What Do Immunoglobulins Do and How Do They Work?

There are five major types of antibodies, immunoglobulins A, D, E, G, and M, of which immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most abundant. IgG makes up between 75% and 80% of all immunoglobulins, and it can be found in all bodily fluids. IgG is essential when it comes to fighting off antigens but, when counts are low, your immune system becomes much less effective.

There are many different ways your body can be immunoglobulin-deficient. When your ...
... body undergoes trauma or stress, this signals your body to send immunoglobulin fighters to resolve the problem. It's an absolute marvel that your body is able to respond in this way. However, in certain situations, this can leave other parts of your body exposed to additional threats—kind of like fighting a war on two fronts.

For example, if you have a surgery, your body's immunoglobulins are put on high alert and go right to the immediate threat. This depletes overall immunoglobulin levels that can then be used to fight off more "normal" antigens. In other words, your body is robbing Peter to pay Paul, and this undermines your body's overall defenses.

How Do You Prevent This?

There is a way to give your immune system a boost when you are preparing for and recovering from surgery during the perioperative period—30 days before and 30 days after surgery. By supplementing your body’s natural production of immunoglobulins, you can help to ensure your immune system is running on all cylinders. This will help end the internal chaos caused by the stress that surgery puts on your body and accelerate your recovery from surgery.

Where Can You Find IgG?

IgG can often be found in a concentrated form within protein powder nutritional supplements. Serum-derived immunoglobulin concentrate is believed to help increase the potency and effectiveness of IgG over other sources like colostrum and milk—both of which are dairy based that will present problems for people who are lactose intolerant but whom would benefit from IgG.
