There is a story in the Ramayana about how the little squirrel, found all over India, got its three stripes. It happened during the time when Shree Rama's army was building the great bridge which would connect India to Lanka so that the soldiers could cross and help Sree Rama win back his captive wife, Sitajee from Ravana, the King of Lanka. Huge boulders were being lifted and thrown in the sea where they would float (probably because they were coral!).

In the midst of all this activity was little squirrel who was scurrying about carrying little grains of sand on her back. Someone asked her what she hoped to achieve with this miniscule effort. Her reply was that she could only do what was in her power and ability but she too wanted to participate in a BIG EVENT and be of some help to Lord Rama, in her own little way. That is when Sree Rama strokes the little squirrels' back with his fingers and the three stripes were etched on her back forever as reminder of her contribution to the Lord's destiny.
