Indian Saree: The Traditional Wear Of India

Indian sarees are truly beautiful pieces of art. Each state in India produces their own marvellous kind of saree. In fact, any woman who is fond of draping a saree should have a saree of each kind. Here's a lowdown of popular sarees of India.
Bandhani sarees
These colourful sarees are created using the tie-and-dye method. The way the cloth is dyed creates small dyed spots that produce a very elaborate pattern over the saree. These varities are usually done in two contrasting bright colors, like pink and blue or red and black. These sarees are also embellished with pretty, intricate borders. However, the emphasis is always on the tie-and-dyed spots.
Patola sarees
Patola sarees are one of the most time consuming and elaborate creations. These sarees have intricate five colour designs on them. A Patola saree is also done on silk.
Paithani sarees
These sarees are named after a village in Maharashtra. These sarees have distinctive motifs such as parrots, trees and plants carefully woven into the saree. The shades of sarees are bright. Common colours available in Paithani sarees are magenta, ...
... peacock greens and purples. In the pallu portion of the saree, the base is done in gold with patterns that are made throughout the saree. This gives the portion an embossed look.
Chanderi sarees
Chanderi sarees have originated from Madhya Pradesh. These sarees are made in silk or fine cotton. The patterns are lifted from Chanderi temples.
Banarsi sarees
Banarsi sarees particularly Banarsi Brocade usually borrow their designs from Moghuls. These sarees have intricate floral motifs like the kalga and the bel. Other patterns in these sarees are called jhallars that look like a string of upright leaves. This is a signature pattern of Banarasi brocade. Banarsi sarees make superb bridal sarees.
Kanjeevwaram sarees
An Indian bride's trousseau is incomplete without a kanjeewaram saree. This saree uses gold-dipped silver thread that is woven on brilliant quality silk. These silk sarees are created in Kanchipuram, a town in Tamil Nadu with more than 150 years of creating beautiful sarees. These sarees are very traditional and completely untouched by fashion trends. A kanjee silk is thicker than all other silks and hence more expensive. The peacock and parrot are the commonest motifs.
Baluchari Sarees
These sarees from Bengal have beautiful floral patterns on them. The anchal is decorated with narrative motifs.
Designer sarees
Net sarees and lehenga sarees are interesting modifications of the traditional sarees. Net sarees make for good bridal wear as net sarees are available in several colours and kinds of embellishments. Lehenga sarees are a combination of a lehenga and saree. These two kind of sarees are not traditional yet very popular in India these days.
If you are looking at doing your bridal shopping anytime soon, include these sarees in your trousseau.
