It is probably impossible to keep a check on the number of people, who are not having access to drinking water. Even difficult is to count the number of people, who are using water which is polluted. Counting or no counting, it is a truth that India water is presently going through a serious crisis. Some say that the shortage of water is the looming danger ahead, while others are opining that water pollution is crossing dangerous levels. A count of coliforms in the River Yamuna near Delhi showed the level to be 17,000 million MPN/100 ml, while the permissible limit for bathing water is 500 MPN/100 litres.

• If the above figure is taken into account, then it is extremely clear that water pollution is under treacherous dangers. It is not unnatural that people suffer from various gastrointestinal illnesses when such water is used for different purposes. This is just a small reflection of the manner in which water pollution is affecting us and it is time to think of the ways in which wastewater treatment can be effected in India. Most of the pollution in the rivers and water bodies, around the urban areas is because of ...
... the wastewater getting drained into them.

At this juncture, it would be prudent enough to consider that wastewater treatment would be a solution to free the rivers from getting excess waste drained into them. To a large extent, as it is in such case, there is possibility to increase the available resources of cleaner water and using it for bathing purposes. Therefore, wastewater treatment can be taken up on a large scale, by public private partnership, to augment the present resources of water supply in most of the urban bodies. Such treatment plants can be set up by the local municipal bodies or the industries who have their units in the area. Issues of India water will be controlled to a large extent by such solutions.

Another concept that is related to the wastewater treatment is that of water reuse. By conserving the water which is draining out as waste or falling down as rain, water reuse can be done. For such a thing to be practically possible, it requires an effort from people societies, non-governmental organisations, government and private companies to set up proper machineries and equipments, which could remove the impurities including bacterial components, to make the water reusable. It can then be supplied into the industries and households again, solving the problem of water supply.

• Most of the water that is presently being supplied in India is from the groundwater resources present in the country. But, surrounding the major coastlines of India are plenty of water, which can be utilised for water supply, thereby solving one of the problems faced in the country, which is that of water supply. But, since the water bodies in the country, like rivers finally fall into the oceans and seas, it is indirectly effective to have clean water, if the water pollution is controlled. Desalination is then possible to be done for the sea water and India water woes can be settled.

In India, major part of the problem of water supply depends on how efficiently the issue of water pollution is tackled. It is a matter which needs attention from different aspects, including the people themselves, so that pollution of water is prevented and wastewater treatment or other means are adopted to improve the purity of the water bodies within the country.
