How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?
Most lawns need mowing once a week during the warmer months, and once every two to four weeks in cooler months when growth slows down. That said, the right frequency depends on grass type, the season, and how much rain the area gets. Getting the timing right is one of the simplest ways to keep a lawn looking healthy year-round.
Why Mowing Frequency Matters
Mowing isn't just about appearance. Cutting grass too often stresses the plant and weakens its roots. Leaving it too long between mows can smother the lawn, encourage weeds, and make the eventual cut harder on the grass. The goal is consistency, not perfection. A lawn mowed on a steady schedule copes better with heat, foot traffic and pests than one that's cut in fits and starts.
The One-Third Rule
A good rule of thumb used by gardeners everywhere is the one-third rule: never cut more than a third of the grass blade length in a single mow. For a lawn meant to sit at around 5cm, that means mowing once it reaches 7 to 7.5cm. Cutting further than that in one go shocks the grass and can leave it patchy or yellow.
Seasonal Differences
Spring ...
... and summer. Grass grows fastest during warm, wet months. Weekly mowing is usually needed to keep on top of it, especially for couch, kikuyu and buffalo lawns common in Australian gardens.
Autumn. Growth slows as temperatures drop. Every 10 to 14 days is often enough.
Winter. Many lawns go semi-dormant. Mowing every three to four weeks, or only as needed, is usually sufficient.
Rainfall also plays a role. A wet stretch can push grass to grow faster than usual, even outside of its typical season, so it pays to check the lawn's height rather than mowing purely on a calendar.
Signs a Lawn Needs a Cut
For anyone not tracking dates, these cues are a useful guide instead:
Grass blades flopping over rather than standing upright
Uneven patches where growth looks shaggy
Difficulty seeing the mower's wheels move smoothly through the grass
Increased weed activity, since overgrown lawns give weeds more room to establish
Other Factors That Affect Mowing Frequency
Not every lawn follows the same schedule. A few things can shift how often mowing is needed:
Grass type. Warm-season grasses like buffalo and kikuyu grow faster in summer than cool-season varieties.
Sun exposure. Full-sun lawns typically grow faster than shaded areas.
Fertilising. A recently fertilised lawn will need more frequent mowing as growth accelerates.
Irrigation. Regularly watered lawns grow faster and need more attention than those relying on rainfall alone.
Should Mowing Height Change With the Seasons?
Yes. Most lawns benefit from a slightly longer cut in summer, which helps the grass retain moisture and shade its own roots during hot weather. In cooler months, a shorter cut is generally fine since growth and evaporation both slow down.
When to Call in a Professional
A consistent mowing schedule is easy to fall behind on, especially during peak growing season when a week's delay can mean the difference between a quick trim and a much bigger job. For anyone short on time, or dealing with a lawn that's already gotten away from them, professional gardening services can bring a garden back under control and keep it on a manageable, regular schedule going forward.
