Mary Kom Urges Women To Take Up Self-defense Classes
The Delhi gang rape is just one of the myriads of atrocities being committed against women on a day to day basis. To drag the issue out further and give one’s two cents worth on the ‘action and opposite reaction’ of it all, would be adding insult to that hellish turmoil that unfortunate victim went through. But respecting a person’s privacy or values or rights, for that matter, is not what India is known for. If we have an opinion, no matter how uncouth, we will broadcast it to the public in the most popular medium there is, without so much as an inkling of good sense and basic humanity.
Recently a well know agricultural scientist voiced her hypothesis on the issue, claiming that it was inappropriate for the girl to be out with her friend at that time of the night. She didn’t stop there; she went on to suggest that it would have been better, if she had submitted to the rape instead of resisting it. While many other highly educated people in influential positions had more or less similar take on the subject, one viewpoint by a sensible lady was worth listening to. The lady in question is none other India’s ...
... own golden child- Mary Kom.
She is a five time world boxing champion and a bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics. India couldn’t be more proud of her. Even if she came in third place, the bronze she bagged was worth its weight in gold. Recently she urged the women of India to take up self-dense or martial arts classes as a way to defend them against situations like what transpired in Delhi. She believes that if she can take up boxing why the rest of the women can’t indulge in some form of martial art or another. Kudos to Kom, for offering a pragmatic solution to the problem at large without sounding condescending.
Unlike other pseudo personalities, Mary Kom profile and accomplishments speaks for her. The story of her journey from the jhum fields of Manipur, to the podium in the London Games, where she was conferred with the bronze medal, is a truly inspiring one. So inspiring that Bollywood director, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is doing a biopic on her life, with actress Priyanka Chopra playing the lead. But she doesn’t need a movie deal to immortalize her; Mary Kom impressive statistics have already made her a living legend.
