Being a land of varied cultures, India reflects a lot of variety in cultural traditions and rituals. For instance, weddings in India are always marked by some amount of differences in terms of rituals and traditions. However, there are a few things which still remain the same. These include the bridal attire of the Indian brides.
Right form Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the brides are all decked in up fine clothing and jewellery to look splendid for the day and most of them choose the colour red, to celebrate the festivities. Let’s take a sneak peek into the various types of Indian wedding dresses that are usually seen in Indian marriages.
The traditional red sari
A sari is usually a 5-6 meters of long cloth that is draped around in an intricate way. In fact, some amount of the cloth is left loose to hang on from the shoulder, making the entire look appealing. ...
... This has several ways of getting draped on the wedding day. This sari is usually in its bright red form accompanied with lots of fine work over it, preferably on silk material. Benarasi sari’s, heavily embroidered kanjeevarams, etc. are a few favorites with the Indian brides. Mostly North Indians, prefer to wear such saris as their wedding dress. Bengalis too love this shade of sari and sport it on their weddings as well.
The white sari
Down south, the sari still remains the hot favorite with brides, but Kerala brides prefer it in absolute white. Traditional wedding dress of the Kerala brides is a heavy white silk sari, with lots of jewellery and flowers to go with.
Lehengas
Lehenga is another hot favorite outfit with the brides, who wish to give traditional sari a miss. It’s usually a combination of a short or long blouse with a long skirt. The entire dress is heavily done in fine work on a fine material, preferably silk or velvet or georgette. The outfit is getting quite popular these days, considering the variety of fancy lehengas that gets displayed in movies. This outfit is also known as ghagra choli. It is mostly worn by brides from the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and a few other north Indian states as well.
Sometimes Muslims and parsi brides also prefer this garment for their weddings.
Salwar kameez
Traditionally, this dress is worn by Punjabi and Sikh brides, dominating the north Indian states of Punjab and Delhi. The traditional outfit comprises of a pyajama, coupled with a long kurta and a dupatta. This garment is usually in red or pink colour and has fine embroidery all over it. The embroidery preferred on salwar kameez is mostly called zari or zardozi work. The dupatta is supposed to fall demurely over the bride’s head, and the colour red adds a tint of rose red to her face.
White wedding gowns
The white flowing wedding gowns are usually worn either down south or in the western region of our country, where the Christian or Anglo Indian community thrives the most. Though some may prefer to wear a sari, in white, some also prefer to go the traditional way of walking down the aisle in a mesmerizingly white mesh worked gown.
Weddings are beautiful and the most beautiful element happens to be the bride. Right from her traditional dress, jewellery to make up, everything reminds about the festivities and makes the event look beautiful. Hence, Indian wedding sarees, salwar kameez, lehengas and gowns, she looks splendid in all the avatars.
