“The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but at the end, warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.” Carl Jung

Latest researches have confirmed the value of preschool curriculum that supports effective teaching practices and also leads to social and intellectual development of children at this crucial period of their life. It is very important for their life long learning and academic process. First 2000 days of a child are very critical for the brain development as the growth rate is rapid at this stage. So it becomes utmost important that the curriculum which is given to the children should contribute positively in the learning process by facilitating a stimulating environment in the foundation years of life. The curriculum should help to build the connection between the real and meaningful concepts of life and the information provided to them in preschools. It is also significant to involve the parents, other family members and community in it. Amartya Sen, once quoted that the curriculum of the school should ...
... not neglect a country’s analytical, cultural and scientific heritage and also be very much involved with the rest of the world. Hence, a sound developmentally appropriate curriculum is the best option for young children to best assist them in reaching their full potentials in all the domains, that is: cognitive, physical, social and emotional.

Major domains of preschool curriculum- the curriculum in preschools should address the various aspects of an overall development of a child. An integrated and activity based approach must be followed wherein the child learns and masters the basic skills which are necessary for his holistic development.

A. Physical development- Movement is the key to physical development. Gross motor skills which include running, throwing, catching, jumping, and all other movements which involve large muscles of the body. Fine motor skills which include hand-eye coordination, writing, finger movements, beading, blocks and the movements involving small muscles of the body. Along with this, overall physical balance and coordination, space and direction awareness, health and nutrition should also be a part of preschool curriculum to ensure the proper physical well being of the child.

B. Cognitive development- An ideal preschool curriculum should include the components which lead to initiate the critical thinking skills of a child. Along with this, observation, reasoning and logic, problem solving, questioning, sequential thinking, knowledge about the real concepts like social and biological environment are also some of the major aspects to be covered. And the most important factors to be included are number concepts, pre math concepts like seriation, counting, classification, grouping, pre reading skills and pre writing skills.

C. Socio-personal and Emotional development- The curriculum should be framed in such a way that the children learn basic personal and social skills which enable them to cope-up well within the social circumstances in their lives. They learn a sense of their self, who they are and what are their capabilities. They also learn to establish positive relations with their peers and teachers and also effectively learn to participate in team/group activities. It also involves self control, habit formation, persistence, initiative and curiosity, cooperation, group interaction and expressing feelings etc.

C. Creative and Aesthetic development- Preschool children express their feelings and emotions through a variety of gestures or symbols. They represent what they know through their art work, role play or dramatic play and music. These forms of arts enhance their ability to express themselves in much efficient way and also help in interpreting the ideas which are essential for their growth and development.
