“mens Sana In Corpore Sano” (a Healthy Mind In A Healthy Body)

This is a famous saying that is said to have originated from Greek philosopher Thales of 6th century BC. Over the passage of time, it has come to have different meanings, but its intended meaning is said to be that only a healthy body can support the mind that is healthy, and vice-versa. Others say that the balanced meaning of the phrase somehow mandates every individual to strive for a healthy mind and a healthy body at the same time to avoid getting a useless healthy body if the mind is not healthy. For the mind to be healthy a person must be completely sane and with a mind that is free from any mental disorder.
Mens sana in corpore sano further points out certain important aspects of life, thus: (a) A balanced life can keep the mind and body clear, (b) Equal attention must be given to the body and mind for a sound physical existence, (c) A health body can be achieved through balanced nutrition, exercise, hygiene and regular examinations, and (d) For a healthy mind to exist, an ideal environment should be provided ...
... by a healthy body and some forms of maintenance done to the mind such as relaxation, meditation, mental exercise like thinking, recreational activities, and sufficient stress management. Relatively, therefore, a healthy mind can be had through reading, doing word puzzles and some problems of logic, playing a musical instrument and socializing with friends and acquaintances. A healthy body, on the other hand, can be achieved by eating sensibly and more fish, avoiding refined carbohydrates, and keeping physically occupied.
First century AD Roman poet and writer Juvenal had advised an ordinary person to pray for a healthy mind in a health body in order to avoid getting sick physically, and crazy. British philosopher John Locke of 18th century said that the saying fully describes a person’s happy state and answers the question of what must be desired in life for a person. An on-going research on the mind and body says that evidence points out that physical activity or exercise can delay neuro-cognitive or mental decline and the major public health problem of Alzheimer’s disease.
This is supported by some experimental studies which find that physical or body activity helps protect brain function to stimulate proteins and neural growth. A review of observation studies in the United States has concluded that exercise in late life as in seniors, has less risk factors for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Another study by Dr. Eric Larson and his colleagues at the American College of Physicians has found important evidence showing that more physical exercises can lower the risks of dementia. Other studies on dementia show that older men who walk at least two miles every day have lower risk for mental disease and that physical activity can result in many health benefits that include prevention of dementia and mental deterioration.
Let us be reminded, therefore, that mens sana in corpora sano is all about balances in life or, specifically, between mind and body. Without a healthy mind, there can never be a healthy body, nor there a healthy body without a healthy mind.
