A Brief Overview To The Application Of Sport Psychology
Sport psychology is a branch of applied disciplines and it primary deals with the scientific study of functional behavior of players before and after the game. Earlier this study was not provided much importance but today it has been included in the curriculums and schools and colleges. Students study the behavior of players to understand what makes a player do better than others.
Performance of two players can never be similar even when they get similar training. It is due to the difference in their mental strength. No two persons can be equal in mental power. When in ground, players have to deal with different emotional problems like some are afraid of losing the game, some think about winning the game, while there are others that are playing for fun and entertainment.
What a player should think about when he is out in the ground and the audiences are waiting to see some action. Should the player follow the audiences’ demand or should he focus on individual game? A game can be won only with team efforts is a fact but this though could discourage players from giving their best. Team demands individual efforts ...
... and every player should encourage others to do well.
Sport psychology deals with the factors that impact players’ behavior. For instance players of the losing team in a game would feel discourage and this feeling would reduce their strength and blunt their edges. If they can strike with whatever energy they have left, they can change the game. Team managers, fans and fellow players try encouraging their teammates by shouting slogans and reminding them about the past victories. It is all part of a psychological exercise to revive the team’s strength.
To learn sport psychology, one needs not to go back to school or college as there are many journals, periodicals and books written on this subject. Eminent players compiled their experiences with their respective sports and present them in an interesting manner. Research scholars publish research papers to educate common man about the mental pressure a player suffers before and after a game.
It is a mistaken belief that players come under pressure only when they are on the ground. In reality the pressure starts developing right after announcement of the dates of matches. People want to see their favorite players in action and this creates unnecessary pressure on the players. In sport psychology, you can study the factors that build pressure on a player.
