The Many Uses For Koozies

Recently, someone mentioned the word koozies and it made me laugh. I knew I had heard the term but couldn't place what it was. It kind of reminds you of cozy or Uzi, but koozies neither relate to comfort nor machine guns.

A koozie is not yet found in many dictionaries, but it basically means a can cover that insulates the temperature of pop, beer or whatever else is in the can. In practice, that means on a warm day (or indoors) your drink will stay colder longer. In fact, it is said that on hot days, a koozie can keep your drink cold for up to an hour! Normally, it would start getting warm within 10 minutes!

Koozies are generally made of a spongy fabric material, around an inch or so in thickness usually. Many sports teams have had koozies made with their team logos on them for use at sports events, and to promote their team. They actually became popular starting in the early 1990's. That's probably why the term sounds familiar (even if you couldn't place what a koozie was at first).

Other companies and businesses have followed suit, and now use koozies as a promotional tool to get the word out, ...
... and brand their products or services. If you have a small business, this could be a very personalized way to do so. Your customers (and potential customers) love getting something free. We all do!

How many times have you heard about (or seen) businesses giving out freebies that were useless? For example, who wants a keychain with someone's logo on it? If it's not your business (or that of your friend or family member) you would not use this. The same goes for T-Shirts and Hats. These are clothing, yes, but no one wants to be your walking advertisement for the sheer sake of advertising.

Koozies, on the other hand, are genuinely useful, and most people don't mind if a logo is on their koozie, as long as it keeps their beer or pop cold when they use it!

Now, on the flip side of things, if a business offers a free koozie (or several), take them up on the offer! Two things will happen: first of all, you will have a useful little thing which you can keep in the cupboard for those warm days (and take with you to events and outdoor activities); secondly, you will be helping that business spread the word about what they do, without having to blatantly advertise it (as you would on a T-shirt, hat or otherwise).

Getting back to the word Koozie, though...Who thought of that word? Why in the world would you name something that? It's silly, almost ridiculous sounding! Isn't it? Exactly! Maybe that is the reason koozies are called that! Maybe it's because it will get people's attention (in theory) because it is so different?

All I know is that now that I remember what koozies are, I think I’m gonna go pick one up with my favorite sports team logo on it or something!
