Sir Walter Scott “reinvented” kilts for men in its modern form and from that day onwards, it was recognized to be a National Costume. People started wearing these kilts in ceremonies and formal occasions. Weddings are one of those famous occasions that requires using a kilt. But this isn’t the only occasion when Scottish people use the same. There are a few other occasions when you can see a lot of men wearing these fashionable skirts.

Highland games

These games usually take over the whole Scotland during the summer months. If you are getting used to seeing athletes wearing “shorty shorts”, then this is where Scottish men differ. This is the time of the year when you can see athletes, dancers, judges and pipe bands wearing their fashionable kilts.

Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Okay, this is not the usual tattoo season that you are thinking of. Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of the biggest tourist events in Scotland. It started in 1949 and until now it has been known to be a great occasion. Held every August, this is when you’ll see a world class extravaganza with pipe band, martial arts ...
... display and many more. Since this is a yearly occasion and a tourist attraction, you can also see a lot of Scottish men wearing kilts here!

Tartan Day

This is one of the major occasions where strong countries like the United States, Canada and the UK particularly Scotland, celebrate their strong connections with each other. In the United States, Tartan Day is celebrated every 6th of April and is a national holiday. Commemorating their links with Scotland, towns and cities from the United States and Canada will usually make merry on that day with pipe bands with a touch of Scottish culture such as wearing their national costume -- kilts.

Saint Paddy’s Day

Quite familiar with the event? Yes, this is the feast Saint Patrick. It is a cultural and religious occasion which is usually celebrated on the 17th of March. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and the day is believed to be a celebration of the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. You will notice that green colored kilts and costumes are present during this day. Shamrocks and green ribbons are usually a few of the accessories people use to honor this day.

Graduation ceremonies

If in other countries suits are worn during graduation, you better watch out when a Scottish student graduates. They march to the stage wearing their finest kilts. Held with much importance and value, they feel wearing kilts should be done during important days in their lives such as the day they leave the academe.

Scottish tartans are part of the most treasured culture that Scottish people are proud of. This is one trait that every nation and country should follow. One must show respect and love to the place that’s given you enough space to breathe and live your life. Let’s all try to be like them, loving and proud of their culture.
