Any injury that a person receives to the brain is called a concussion. When a person receives a blow to the head the brain literally shakes inside. The stronger the blow is to the person the more damage is being done. It can be a minor concussion which can go away after a while or it can be one that can lead to unconsciousness, paralysis and even death depending on the force. Most concussions happen with athletes during sports time and they do not suffer loss of consciousness. However since athletes run with such force the impact can sometimes be very big leading to chronic problems that include temporary or permanent memory loss, cognitive, behavioral and emotional issues that can sometimes take months or even years to heal. There are athletes that do not want to stop playing and would therefore not report it when it happens, instead they would return to the game. However going back to the field before any injuries are fully healed puts the player at risk. In order to protect the players two things are being done. One is to educate the players about safety and how they can protect themselves. There have also been rules that were enforced in order to protect the players and to try to prevent any injuries from happening. Players are encouraged to play with their heads up. They also need to report anything that happens so that they can receive medical attention as soon as possible. Another thing that was introduced was the helmets and mouth guards that are worn at all times during games and that should absorb any impacts that an athlete receives which in turn reduces the force of the blow to the head. A lot of research and experiments have been done to see which materials would be the best to protect the head. For every sport they have come up with a different materials and designs which best protects according to that game. The football helmets are designed with a thick plastic on the outside and padding on the inside which absorbs most of the impact from a direct blow. It protects players from other athletes that can run into them or when they fall and hit the ground. IT also protects from any oral or dental injuries that can occur.

At first people thought of concussions as a minor thing. However since more and more cases have been reported athletes are more aware of the dangers and have taken appropriate measures in order to be protected.
