Taekwondo- The Top Class Martial Art

Learning a skill to protect self and others is always appreciable. Such a known skill is Martial Arts. It is derived from the word ‘Mars’ which means the ‘God of Wars’. There are a variety of Martial arts in existence. Comprehensively the styles are; low impact, grappling, striking, using weapons etc. Out of these the most popular striking style martial art is Taekwondo.

Taekwondo is of Korean origin. It is the only martial art that shows up the tradition of Korea. It is highly influential and the best way used to spread the culture of its birth place. In the word Tae Kwon do, ‘Tae’ represents kicking, striking, jumping, or even using your foot. ‘Kwon’ means use of Fist. ‘Do’ means the way of art. It is the way of using the fists and legs more than any other parts of the body. This art is characterized by more of kicking and this is the main difference between Karate and this particular art.

The major benefits are Physical fitness, increased concentration, increased focus, weight loss, weight maintenance, increased courage, improved self-respect and self-admiration etc. It is also taken by people for other reasons as well namely; passion, career, or could be due to the above mentioned benefits.

This specific martial art is also known as TKD, the short form of the same. By the year 1989, it became the most well known art in terms of the increased practitioners and after introduction at the Olympics as a demonstration sport in the year 1988, Gyeorugi a type of this art became a permanent sport from the year 2000. It consists of two types of branches that are as follows:

a)Traditional type: From the name itself, we can understand that is actually the traditional type of Martial arts which originated in the year 1950 and 1960 in the South Korea. It mainly depicts the Korean culture, tradition, religion and philosophy. It was introduced in schools, universities, military and various other organizations.

b)The other style is the Sport style. This style of Martial Art is totally different in terms of speed and competition. It is further divided into two more styles out of which one is governed by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and the other is governed by the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF). The sparring type that is used in the Olympics comes from the WTF.

In short Tae Kwon do can be understood as the way you use your hand and foot. The techniques of this art taught from one school or an academy to another always varies. More than learning the fighting skills it trains not only body but also our mind. In today’s scenario, it stands out as a sport with a reputation that gets people following to learn the same.
