What Makes Fixed-gear Bikes Unique?
Fixed-cycle bicycles or fixies are special bicycles without brakes. These bicycles are those in which freewheels are absent. They have low weight and require less energy. Also, they have fixed gears (as the name suggests).
These bicycles are preferred by those who race. Cycle enthusiasts prefer fixies over other bicycles. It helps pedaling easily. They are light, and so can be balanced upright readily. However, you must know how to control these bikes. The gears of fixed gear bikes should be kept fixed while riding on a slippery ground.
Amateurs are usually unable to control the bike at high speeds and at corners of the road. Fixed-cycle bicycles have lesser parts than a geared bicycle. As a result, it requires less maintenance. The rear wheel is the most essential part. So, it must b checked regularly. Although, Fixed-cycle bicycles have tighter chains in it, making it comparatively stronger, you are required to lubricate the chains regularly. These are preferred brakeless. Why? This adds no extra load on the bicycle. But, the brakeless Fixed-cycle ...
... bicycles are undoubtedly dangerous to ride. Thus, they are prohibited. In countries like Australia, you are required to have at least one brake in the bicycle.
While riding fixed-cycle bicycles, it is advised to focus all the weight of front wheel rather than the rear wheel. The crank rotation and your body weight must always oppose each other for a smooth ride. Usually rear brakes are given instead of front brakes. The brakes on rear end encourage higher deceleration. This is another reason why your weight should be concentrated on the front wheel. The efficiency of rear brake will be more when lesser weight is given on it. However, countries like New Zealand encourage the presence of front brakes. If you are riding in Spain, make sure your fixed gear bikes, are equipped with proper front as well as rear brakes.
