The shortcoming by buying at auto auction is most of auction organizer not allowed costumer to do test drive for the items they sold. This factor makes some people afraid of getting not so good one and hesitate buying at car auction. Actually, you can drive away your worry about it by doing static examination. Doing static examination, not just examine the car's body and the interior, but also the engine.
Indeed, engine is the heart of the car, therefore good or bad quality of the engine will give big impact for the car, so you need to be careful when doing examination.

First, lift the hood and check the cleanness of external engine, if it has few oil mark and dust is normal, if it was extremely dirty, that car possibly wear in a big way. But if it looks clean and shiny, then you must pay more attention, probably car's owner want to cover up some information and clean it before sell it at auction.

Hood examination is also very important. Look underside the hood if it has baking varnish trace or spot welding shape, also the size is inconsistent, than car is very possibly had an accident before.

Next, ...
... check the engine oil including oil level, oil color, and oil filler. If the oil level excessively high, shows the engine has serious gas leaks or water leaks. Then use white paper wipe the oil to check oil color. If the color nigrescence is normal, if is other colors is freak occurrence. Open the oil filler cup and look at the internal side. If it covered with thick black deposits, also the greasy dirt mixed with water droplet on it, it may be an indication that the engine has serious problem, maybe the cylinder pad, cylinder head or cylinder body was damaged, causes antifreeze permeating to oil machine. If that happens, the contaminated oil is likely cause internal damage to the engine, and the engine may needs a complete overhaul.

Third, check coolant, accumulator and air filter. Engine coolant examination must carry on with the engine off, to avoid being burned. Check the coolant surface whether has other foreign matter floating, if there is a layer of oily film floating on the top, that possibly has machine oil permeate inside it. If corrosion dust was found floating, it indicates that the radiator has serious corrosion, which will give big impact to the engine. The accumulator observation may examine whether has evidence of fluid leaks.

Air filter inspection can show how the maintenance of the car, if you see a lot of dust inside the air filter, and filter element is very dirty, it shows the frequency of using car is quite often, and it has poor maintenance. According this quality of maintenance, the car will not at very good condition at all.

In fact, engine static examination and dynamic examination are similarly important. By doing engine static examination you can also discover a lot of problem with the car. If you do it carefully, the examination result is not inferior to the result obtained by dynamic examination, you can also get the certain price estimation of the car.
