After coming close in several of the prior seasons, Dallas finally broke through to win its first Super Bowl in 1971. Six years later, the Cowboys captured another NFL title. With Landry on the sidelines and Staubach directing the offense, Dallas made five Super Bowl appearances from 1970-78.

After the Cowboys struggled during the final few seasons of Tom Landry's 29-year tenure with the club, new owner Jerry Jones brought in Jimmy Johnson to become the head coach in 1989. Aikman, Irvin and Smith would ultimately lead the Cowboys to three Super Bowl titles from 1992-95.
