Canada's best chance at winning ...
... an Olympic medal in athletics, may just be Canada's strongest Olympian.

However, those findings were overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport because Pistorius’ considerable disadvantages in accelerating at the start had not been considered.

The world record holder flew to Germany last night to see a specialist about her niggling foot injury.

Before leaving she admitted facing a battle to be fit just a month before the biggest race of her life.

Injury and illness have wrecked the 38-year-old’s previous two attempts for Olympic glory in Athens and -Beijing.

But while she remains determined to finally break her Olympic medal duck on home soil, Radcliffe admits she is walking an injury tightrope.

“This is very exciting for us, it would have been a little tragedy to say no. If he had not been in the 4x400m he would not be selected, but now that he can take part, the country, and indeed the world, is quite excited about it.”

Rebecca Tunney was the not-so-surprise selection to the women's team, after the 15-year-old took the all-round title at the British Championships a fortnight ago on her senior debut, and will be the youngest British athlete. Tunney competes alongside 19-year-old Hannah Whelan, who won bronzes on both beam and floor at this year's European Championships, three-time Commonwealth champion Imogen Cairns, and Jenny Pinches, the British beam champion.

But it is Beth Tweddle's presence at her third Games that will most hearten the team, who refer to her as their "mother hen". The inclusion of Britain's most successful gymnast of all time was by no means assured, after needing keyhole surgery on her knee in April. "Everyone knows that I've had a few injury worries," she said, "so finally to get that phone call was a massive relief." She will compete for an individual medal on her favourite apparatus, the uneven bars, but will not enter the floor finals as she had originally hoped.

Any appeal would have to be lodged within 24 hours of Tuesday's team announcement and then heard within 48 hours. The appeals panel consists of UKA chairman Ed Warner, UKA president Lynn Davies and an independent barrister.

"There is always going to be a point when I just can't do it anymore and it is just about managing it."

She added: "I need to be able to run as much as I can before the Olympics so it would be good to not be in agony after I have finished training."

Speaking about injuries impacting on her athletic career, Radcliffe said: "It is something that I have lived with for the last 18 years and I know it goes in cycles.

"I was just hoping that it wasn't going to have its next little flip out until after the Olympics."

She added: "I always knew that at some point my body is going to say I can't do it anymore but I just hope and pray that it's not just yet"

Radcliffe's last performance was at the Vienna half marathon in April where she finished in 1hr 12min 3sec – the worst time of her career over that distance.
