Healthcare remains an exciting career field for those who want to help people and do good things for society. Every day, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals prescribe medicines, administer treatments and do much more to facilitate the healing of sick and injured people. Registered Nurses (RNs) play a particularly important role in the healthcare industry, as they are often on the frontline of patient care and treatment.

This is true for every state in the union, including Florida. What does an RN do and what kind of degree program must a prospective RN in Florida complete to become a registered nurse? Read on to find out.

What Does a Registered Nurse Do?

In most doctor's offices and hospitals, registered nurses are the individuals that have the most interaction with patients. RNs may perform a variety of tasks, some of which include:

• teaching patients and their families how to take care of themselves
• explaining diagnoses, treatments and prognoses
• performing lab tests and monitoring patient symptoms
• recording patient histories and treatment outcomes
...
... • informal counseling of patients and their families

Registered nurses learn many of these skills in the RN programs offered in Florida. Others, such as empathy, are not as easily taught. In any case, anyone who loves people and is interested in the sciences should have no difficulty completing a nursing degree program and becoming an RN.

What are the requirements to become an RN?

There are a variety of RN programs in Florida that equip students to become registered nurses. Students may choose to complete a bachelor degree in nursing, or they can enroll in a certified two-year program. Either way, at least two years of nursing training is required to become an RN.

Some RNs start out as licensed practical nurses (LPNs), but you do not have to become an LPN before becoming certified as an RN. The main advantage to starting out as an LPN is that you gain practical experience and on-the-job training even before you start your RN education.

Completing one of the many RN programs in Florida is required to become a certified RN, but you cannot become an RN until you also pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. This exam, more popularly known as the NCLEX-RN, demonstrates your knowledge of nursing to the certification board. Passing it allows you to apply for nurse licensure in Florida. Licensure can be the culmination of years of exciting study and practice, and it readies you to compete a job in the medical field.
