What 1,286 Tutors Actually Charge For Home Tuition In Delhi Ncr (2026 Fee Study)
Ask five people what a home tutor in Delhi costs and you will get five different numbers, all of them confident. One neighbour pays Rs 400 an hour. A colleague insists nothing decent comes below Rs 1,000. A tuition agency quotes a monthly package that works out to something else entirely. None of them can tell you where their number came from.
We decided to stop guessing. EZ Tuitions runs a platform where tutors register and set their own hourly rates. On 22 September 2026 we took a read-only snapshot: 7,500+ registered profiles, of which 1,286 carried a self-set hourly rate between Rs 50 and Rs 5,000. This article is what those 1,286 rates actually say.
The short answer: Rs 350-600 an hour covers the middle half
Across all 1,286 profiles, the middle half of asking rates sits between Rs 350 and Rs 600 per hour. The median is Rs 500, the 10th percentile is Rs 200 and the 90th is Rs 1,000.
But the median hides something odd. 483 of the 1,286 rates - 37.6% - are exactly Rs 500. Add the next five round numbers (Rs 300, Rs 400, Rs 600, Rs 200 and Rs 1,000) and those six figures cover 73.4% of every rate ...
... in the study. 97.7% of all rates are a multiple of Rs 50. Tutors, like everyone else, price in round numbers.
So treat Rs 500 as a reference point, not a rule. A tutor asking Rs 450 is not suspiciously cheap, and one asking Rs 800 is not automatically overpriced.
Your city changes the spread, not the centre
The median is Rs 500 in every city with enough data to report: New Delhi (492 profiles), Noida (141), Gurgaon (75), Ghaziabad (70) and Mumbai (54), which we include as a comparison. What actually moves by city is the spread:
- Noida is the tightest. Three quarters of Noida profiles ask Rs 500 or less (p25 Rs 350, p75 Rs 500).
- New Delhi's middle half runs Rs 400 to Rs 600.
- Gurgaon has the highest ceiling: a quarter of its profiles ask Rs 700 or more.
- Ghaziabad's middle half is Rs 350-Rs 650.
- Mumbai has the lowest floor (p25 Rs 300) on the smallest sample, so read that row with caution.
Online or at your home: the gap sits at the bottom
Online profiles (531 of them) show a 25th percentile of Rs 300, while profiles offering tuition at the student's home (263) start higher at Rs 400. The medians are identical at Rs 500. Travel time plausibly explains some of the gap at the lower end, but our slices do not isolate it.
Experience pays, but only in one bucket
Tutors reporting 6-10 years of experience (100 profiles) are the only group whose median moves off Rs 500, to Rs 600, with a top quartile at Rs 800. Curiously, the 10+ years group falls back to a Rs 500 median on a thin sample of 47 - small enough that we would not read much into it.
What these numbers are not
Honest limits, because they decide whether the numbers are worth quoting at all:
- They are asking rates, not settled fees. Families pay tutors directly on our platform, so we see what tutors ask, never what they finally agree.
- They are self-reported, typed in by each tutor at signup.
- They are self-selected. Tutors who work purely by word of mouth are not in any platform's data.
- This is a Delhi NCR dataset with a Mumbai comparison, not an all-India rate card.
Even with those limits, a disclosed dataset of 1,286 real asking rates beats the unsourced "typical fees" figures that float around most tuition content.
How to use this when you negotiate
1. Start from the middle half for your city, not from a single "average".
2. Compare quotes on teaching hours, not monthly totals. Rate x session length x number of sessions is the only fair comparison.
3. Ask what the quote covers: travel, materials, extra sessions before exams, make-up classes.
4. Get the final scope in writing before the first paid session.
