Gastric bypass is a procedure that is performed to reduce the stomach size. It also reduces the need of the amount of food for a patient. It is basically a weight loss method, which is used by those people who are tired of being overweight. This procedure leads to two results. First, is the reduced size of the stomach and second is the improved digestive system.

Gastric bypass surgery procedure can be performed either as open surgery or as laparoscopy. Open surgery is the conventional way, which requires longer recovery time and is more risky. In this process, the surgeon creates an incision on the abdomen to open the stomach and then the bypass procedure is performed. On the other hand, laparoscopy is a less risky process of gastric bypass surgery. The surgeon creates four to six small incisions in the abdomen. A laparscope, which is a camera, is inserted in one of these incisions. Other surgical tools are inserted into other incisions. The camera allows the doctor to see and know what is going inside the body and the rest of the tools are used to perform the procedure.

Gastric Bypass Surgery – The Procedure

The ...
... gastric bypass surgery procedure aims to reduce the size of the stomach. The surgeon operating on your body removes a small pouch that is capable of holding two tablespoons of food. Then staples are used to separate that pouch from the rest of your stomach. Once the surgery is done, the food that you eat goes straight into this pouch and not in your stomach. This ensures that you feel full without eating much. This surgery also has a purpose to reduce the absorption of food in your body. This ensures that your body takes in less fat and calories.

Advantages of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Different types of the gastric bypass surgery procedure result in reduction of 65-80% of excess body weight. Besides weight loss, various other diseases have been rectified and improved through this procedure. These include hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, gastroesophageal reflux, venous thromboembolic, lower back pain, and joint pain. A study has also revealed that this surgery has led to reduction in mortality rate as well.

Risks involved with Gastric Bypass Surgery

Before you opt for this surgery, it is essential to know the risks involved. Many patients have claimed of eroding the vertical band. In some cases, the pouch gets stretched or the staple lines break down. There is also the risk of experiencing leakage into the abdomen from the stomach, which is quite dangerous. You should opt for invasive bypass surgical method if you are not morbidly obese. This is less risky as compared to the extensive surgery, which demands intense monitoring.

It is best to consult your doctor before going for any surgery. Get a thorough checkup and let your doctor decide which surgery will be the most beneficial for your body.
