Everything you need to get started with off-road motorbiking

Off Road Motorbiking is starting to become a very popular pastime however before you take to the trails you need to have the right kit, starting with the bike. There are a variety of off road motorbikes made by well respected manufacturers, however the best Enduro motorbikes are the Honda XR series. The Honda XR250 and XR400 are 4 stroke enduro bikes and renowned for their ‘bomb proof’ reliability. They can be registered for use on the road and unlike most enduro bikes they do not require much maintenance, making them ideal for long distance off road adventures. The extra power generated by the XR400 will keep even the most hardened off roader happy after several days on the trails.

In order to stay safe off road riders need the correct accessories, including boots, body armour and helmets. Fox is the best manufacturer of boots and body armour and are renowned for their high quality products which provide the necessary protection when you need it the most. It is very important off road riders purchase a comfortable set of boots as there is every ...
... chance they will be in them for up to 8 hours a day! They need to be reinforced at the tow as well as around the ankle, however they also need to be flexible enough to feel the back brake and gear pedal. Body armour needs to provide a snug fit around the body and preferably come with a kidney belt which keeps everything tight around the body. Make sure the armour comes with elbow protection, as well as the usual back and chest protection. The helmet does not have to be a standard motocross helmet, simply ensure your head does not move in the helmet and that you have either a visor or some goggles. Other accessories include a good pair of gloves, some knee protection and some hip protection. Some riders also go as far as to have a neck brace. Finally, to look the part, you can buy some classic motocross trousers and a top in your favourite colours!

So, now you have the kit, where are you going to ride? The problem with the UK is there are very few places where you can just ride all day long. This is why an off road guided tour is such a good idea and the best part of Europe to do this is in the Spanish Pyrenees. In Spain the land ownership laws are different; almost all tracks are owned by the government and therefore classified as public rights of way. Therefore, as long as the bike is registered for use on the road, it is possible to ride on these tracks for miles and miles without touching tarmac. What’s more is that nothing beats riding in the mountains and the Spanish Pyrenees have an abundance of off road tracks which cross all the way over to France. Riding in this vast area obviously requires a lot of knowledge which is why an Off Road Guided Tour is highly recommended. By going on a guided off road motorbike tour you will be able to explore these remote locations in a safe and exciting way. Not only will you be taken to some of the most amazing sites but you will also be in a group of like minded individuals.
