I can remember one of the first times that my father took me out for a nice day of fishing on the water. I was probably about 5 or 6 years old at the time but I still remember it. We were living in Vero Beach Florida at the time and my father had planned to go by himself because he didn't think I was old enough to like fishing let alone know what it was and how to do it. Of course, what 5 year old kid would be interested in anything else other than Sesame Street? At that time sesame Street was the best show on television for us little kids. Not me, I was all in for the fishing trip because I never been on one and was really excited.

I remember getting woke up by my father "Wake up we got to go before the fish wake up and eat breakfast." I looked out my window and saw that it was too dark for a little kid like me to be even up and definitely too early for Sesame Street but my father was getting ready to go and putting on all of his fishing clothes. Once he got dressed he started to help me get dressed with all my fishing clothes on as well so we could get to our fishing spot faster.

... into the old 1977 Torino and headed off to our destination fishing spot which was Lake Okeechobee which about an hour away from our home. I guess I had fallen asleep on the way to the lake and I don't even remember being moved out of the car and placed in a little aluminum john boat. I woke up to the sound of the 9 horsepower Evenrude outboard engine powering our boat rental across the water of Lake Okeechobee. Shortly after that I remember my father pointing at the shore and I saw my first alligator. That thing must have been about a 100 footer in my eyes at the time because everything looks so much bigger when you are younger but I bet it was only about a 6 footer.

After some time driving to a spot the old man always would go to we stopped and set our lines in. This sun was up and I can remember the old man telling me to find one of the fly fishing hat and put it on before I got sunburned. I put on some old Coors hat that my dad had as a backup saving it for the times that someone would forget to bring their own.

We dropped our lines in the water and my father had to help me with mine. I didn't know it at the time but we were using live bait. Shiners, is what you call them. My line sat there for hours with nothing touching it. Then out of nowhere the old man jumps to his standing position and jerks his pole up in the air to set the hook. He places the rod in my hands and held his arms around me so I don't fall in but more importantly, I don't drop his fishing pole in the water. It seemed like it took forever to real this fish in but we finally did. It was my first ever largemouth bass. It looked like a monster but my father believed it to be about a 2 pounder. Not bad for my first fish. I couldn't wait to go home and tell mom.

That day of fishing was one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had. The next day my father went to the store and brought back me a fishing t-shirt with a largemouth bass on it because he believed in wearing fishing t-shirts that had only the fish you catch on them. The fishing shirt that had other fish on them you couldn't wear until you reeled in that species of fish. He said it was for good luck, which he was probably right. Since that day I have never stopped fishing but I have moved on to salt water fishing and have become more addicted to salt water fishing and has become one of the true loves of my life.
