The Costs Of Advertising

There are a lot of steps and a lot of costs associated with advertising. How those costs break down is going to change depending on how much you're getting done, what style of advertising you choose, and how much you're able to accomplish on your own.
Money is one of the biggest differences in how you advertise between the small companies and the larger ones. The large companies have the resources to get as much advertising and as detailed of advertising done as they want to.
But what are all those costs? Here is a breakdown.
Research: this is one of the costs that can be reduced depending on how much work you're able to do yourself. A large company is likely to either have a division set up to handle their research, or simply hire an outside company to handle it. If your company is small enough and you can't handle the expense of leaving this in the hands of someone else it's possible to get the job done yourself, it'll just take a lot more time.
Design: similar to the research you can pay money to have it taken care of by someone else or you ...
... can attempt to handle it yourself. However, given the importance of the visuals in advertisements and how they can get people interested, if you aren't sure of yourself you might want to find someone with experience in design. If you can't afford to have them do it for you, at least have them guide you as much as possible.
Printing: you'll need to find some good printing services if you ever want people to see your advertisements. This isn't something you can do on your own because the best quality ads aren't printed off on a home printer. Plus, if you want to make any bulk orders it'll be best to use an outside company. Do some research into the company with the best color printing services for your needs to make sure you don't spend more than you have to.
Distribution: once again we enter the realm of paying to have it done by someone else or handling it yourself. Obviously if you're going to be taking care of it yourself you'll have a much more limited area you can focus on or advertise to. If you want to only target a local crowd this shouldn't be much of a concern, merely something to be aware of.
Really, advertising isn't much different than most things in life. You always have the choice between taking the additional time to do it yourself or paying a higher price to have it done by someone else, which in turn frees you up to focus on other things. Sometimes the decision on what to do is going to be yours to make, and sometimes finances force you to take the work upon your own shoulders. But no matter what it's best to know what the costs are before you do anything.
