An Overcrowded Market That Is Wellington Wedding Photography

Wedding photography is an interesting industry, especially in a large city like Wellington. There is so much money at stake, not to mention the priceless memories and yet it seems that there is no regulation to control the vendors and help to instill trust for the couples. With the advancement of digital technology, a good DSLR is now within reach of many, from amateurs to serious hobbyists. Recently on a trip to China, I was dumbfounded when I constantly came across many older folks carrying the Canon 5D MkII with them, a tool that far exceeds the needs for most amateurs. I would say that this is one of the main reasons why the wedding photography industry is become more and more saturated and challenging for people who wants to be full time professionals to make a living. But is that bad?
Affordable DSLR has really allowed many people to discover their hidden talents, and in turn the quality of wedding photography has really changed, diversified, and in a big way improved. I definitely was one of those amateur who has really benefitted from the helped of affordable DSLR. It gave me the chance to teach myself, push myself ...
... and be where I am today as a wedding photography, without any formal training. Therefore, I am always grateful for that. Without it, I would not have became a Wellington wedding photographer.
It also means the Wellington wedding photography market is flooded with people who just want to make a quick buck. When you think about it, for a cheap wedding job, one can still earn several hundred dollars for a day of work, which is a very good hourly rate for a second/weekend job. Who would not want that, especially with the high living cost in Wellington? That could mean a free camera after a few jobs, or a new lens, or even sending your children to a better school? The reality is, no one has the right to tell anyone else how to run their lives, how to earn the extra cash that can bring some benefits to them and their families.
Wellington wedding couples now have a huge range of price and quality to choose from, as well as a variety of style and personality to compare between the different wedding photographers. There will always be a demand for cheap photographers to capture the snap shots, and of course for high end photographers and everything in between. For the couples, it is about doing their homework, search around and talking to people. For the photographers, it is about finding that point of difference that can help them to stand out in a very crowded place.
