When coming up with the focus of your advertisements, the first question you should be asking yourself is what do your customers want. This isn't about you. If you're designing advertisements to appeal to you than you aren't focusing on who your real target is.
Part of this amounts to understanding exactly who your target is, as well as understanding what it is that makes them happy. If you don't know what it is that they want then how can you offer them it? Here is the first step towards any great marketing push.

If people like your ad you want them to be able to immediately realize who it is that they're looking at. I've seen interesting ads before where the company seemed to forget to mention who they were. Sure, the ad caught my eye, but I walked away without knowing who put it up. That company didn't get any additional business from me.
Lastly, be sure to make your ads a quick read. Most people aren't going to take five minutes out of their day to thoroughly read through an advertisement. They'll glance over at it, and all you'll have are those few seconds to catch their attention. And once you have that attention, you'll still only have a few additional seconds to make your pitch before they'll be on their way.
Be sure that all the important information is readily available and easy to find. All it should take is ten seconds for a person to understand everything your advertisement is saying. The longer they need to look at it the less likely they are to do so.
Follow these tips and you'll notice a jump in the quality of your advertising, along with a jump in the business those ads get you.
