Apart from many forms of fishing in practice for commercial and industrial usages, the recreational and sport fishing is a class apart. People do it for pleasure, and it develops a sense of competition as well. Catching a fish for recreational purposes also follows certain conventions, rules, licensing restrictions, and laws. The use of nets is prohibited, and catching of fish with hooks not in the mouth is suggested. Sport fishing is primarily done with the help of a rod, reel, line, hooks, and a wide range of baits. A typical fishing gear used in catching a fish is known as fishing tackle. It includes gear and equipments like hooks, fishing rods, lines, sinkers, baits, lures, spears, net, gaffs, traps, waders, and tackle boxes.

Fishing techniques

Reward of getting a nice fish in the process of sport fishing depends on many factors. The place, timing of fishing, the season and weather, experience level, and equipments influence catching of a fish. Despite being the best fishing gear in your hand, you cannot catch a fish unless you know how to make the best use of them.

For catching a fish, a straight-shank ...
... hook should be employed instead of treble hooks hanging from a lure. Plastic jigs or worms must be secured by putting a drop of Superglue on the hook before adding the lure. The lures should be shining; they can be rinsed in warm water and scrubbed with a soft toothbrush and white toothpaste. After luring, it is time to pay attention to hook and bait. Always keep bait alive by keeping it cool. When in water, remain still before casting. Fishes are sensitive enough to feel vibrations and promptly move away from any area of disturbance in the water during fishing.

Catch and Release

The concept of catch and release is of high importance and moral value in catching fish for sports and recreational activities. In angling, it is expected from a sportsperson to return a fish to the water. This practice is known as catch and release and is in practice since 1952 when conservationists and sport fishermen promoted it to ensure sustainability and prevent over-fishing. Proper catch and release reduces fish fighting and even protect fish skin, scales, and slime layers from any damage. Here are some rules of catch and release during fishing.

* Never keep a fish out of water longer than you can stop your breath.
* Keep a fish always in bare hands instead of keeping them in hand covered with gloves or rag.
* Never snatch away a hook out of the fish. Instead, buy an effective hook remover.
* To revive the nerves of unconscious fish, move it gently forward and backward so water can pass through its gills.
* When the fish appears to revive and capable to swim, allow it to go.

Safety while fishing

Catching a fish is always a safe sport, but it is good to be cautious and vigilant about bad weather, encountering insects, protecting from too much sun, and tangling on a fish hook. When going for a fish catch during Kayaking, you must know swimming or be accompanied by a friend or an experience person to guide along the recreational fishing expedition.
