Based in Detroit, Michigan -- the Lions is a professional football team which goes back all the way to 1929 however, back then they were known by a different name, in this case the Portsmouth Spartans. The decade of the Great Depression was of help to the Spartans due to the fact that many of the other independent football teams had no choice but to fold, in the meantime the Spartans joined the NFL but given the financial and geographical conditions they could no longer survive in Portsmouth, so the team was purchased and then moved to Detroit, this was an arrangement for the 1934 football season.
