Flip flops have become a common sight on campuses of universities and polytechnics across Singapore. Girls and boys alike are wearing this easy slip-on footwear daily to their lectures and tutorials. Getting a higher education used to mean that students had to dress smart and present their best selves in classes. Times have changed and Singaporean students now have the liberty to dress in a way that keeps them far more comfortable under the scorching Singapore sun.

While I was definitely not a fan of this flip flop-wearing trend, the new generation of trendy flip flops are far more fashionable and appropriate. Young ladies donning skinny jeans and batwing tops can match their stylish get-ups with comfy flip flops to match. The little accents, like pompoms and flowers in bloom, transform flip flops into far prettier footwear.

They have always come in striking colours. But new generation flip flops are fashionable and eye-catching rather than being an eyesore, as they once were. A streak of lime green, for example, sandwiched in the sole and peeking out from the outline of a new generation flip flop, contrasts ...
... the deep blue that covers the rest of the footwear. It adds an instant uplift without trying too hard. The availability of pure white flip flops with raised platform heels is another example of something previously unseen. Suddenly flip flops can even be classy – to an extent of course.

Throw on a crochet poncho, white jeans and a beanie, and flip flops will suit just fine on your feet for a geography student’s day on campus.
Sandals with a wooden base, slight heel and leather straps are a perfect substitute if you fear flip flops look too casual. I’m a fan of slip-ons for women that look something like the Pier One Thong Sandal found under the flip flops category on a local online shopping site, for campus-appropriate slip-on footwear. The bejeweled one by Seven Seconds is another one I would go for.

Browse around on said Singapore-based store, and you will find quite a number of styles that will suit any young lady keeping up with fashion trends but dressing down for a breezy day at class. I definitely wish there were such pretty options in my day. Shop around for styles like that, girls, and avoid beachwear jandals when you are getting an education.
