Herbs And Vitamins

Herbs refer to any part of a plant that has nutritional or medicinal value. Herbs contain vitamins, minerals, and enzymes and many phytochemicals. Phytochemicals are the non-nutritious part of the plant that offers protective or illness preventative properties. When I think of vitamins I think of just one part of what our foods, a plant or an herb has to offer. I believe that herbs and vitamins are nothing more than food. To say the least, foods, herbs, and vitamins have complex nutritional values. Lets take a quick look at blueberries as just one example. Blueberries contain vitamins K and C and are high in the mineral manganese. Blueberries are also very high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are what our bodies need to fight free radicals. Having too many free radicals can cause illness. Blueberries are a fruit and are also a part of a plant, which classifies them also as an herb. Now, lets take a look at garlic. Garlic contains iron, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, vitamins A, C and zinc. Garlic has also been known historically for its benefits in supporting a healthy immune and cardiovascular system. You can ...
... eat a couple cloves of garlic a day or several servings of blueberries, but everyone wants convenience which leads us to why so many of us seek out herbs and vitamins in supplement form. We have no way of measuring how much vitamin C is in the orange we just ate.
There is a well-known saying that "we are what we eat" or as the bible says "a man reaps what he sows". Currently, many people wonder if our foods have the nutrients they used to have. Our soil becomes more depleted each year and our lawns are ridden with fertilizers and weed killers. It doesn't take a scientist to know that what we eat impacts our overall health. I focus on eating lots of whole grains, fruits and vegetables that are known for being high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals. I still take herbs and vitamins to supplement my diet and to support my body systems. Every time I turn around it seems I am reading another article on herbs and vitamins and what we are deficient in. Each article links another vitamin or herb deficiency to a chronic illness or a specific disease. I take my B-Complex and Rose hips a complete source of vitamin C daily along with several herbs like hawthorn and dandelion. Since I am over 40 I also take a plant-based enzyme. Both the herbs I take are very nutritive and contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes and phytochemicals.
I don't worry about over doing it because I know the supplements I take come from a quality company. I also know that the B and C vitamins are water soluble and made from whole foods for maximum absorption. The herbs are also from the parts of the plants or as I should put it, the right part of the plant ensuring they contain the nutritive properties. Each of us has to do what we feel is best for ourselves. One thing I do know for myself, the better foods I eat the healthier I feel.
