Though the list of top 20 expected contenders, if all goes well and the horses remain in shape the entire season, Bob Baffert will once again make a solid attempt at the Triple Crown, as Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes are individual races he has already won and has made a major reputation with. Challenge is, would one of his horses, make it to the top finest of horses and win him a winner’s circle consecutively in all three legs of the series?
Giant Causeway’s offspring would be competing neck to neck this season and so will Bernardini’s. ... However, the colt has failed to make a similar presence in the two of his consecutive starts, the Grade 2 Robert Lewis Stakes and the San Felipe Stakes. He finished a trailing 8th and 4th in each respectively. Out of decently raced but seldom won Galloping Gal, and sired by Baffert’s another trainee, Indian Charlie, Liaison has yet to hit the mark.
On the other hand, Secret Circle, Baffert’s other contender in the top 20 for Derby; boasts of a decent career win with the last being a recent win at the (Gr.3) SouthWest Stakes and also Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint from previous season. Secret Circle is out of a satisfactory racing mare, Ragtime Hope and is sired by Unbridled’s colt, Eddington who has registered a few graded wins under his belt including a third at Travers Stakes, and victory at Gulfstream Park Handicap and the Pimlico Special Handicap. Secret Circle would be racing in the March 17th Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park on the Derby trail.
Baffert’s other distinctive starts this season were marked by 3yo Drill who won the Gr.2 San Vicente Stakes and has previously won the Gr.1 Del Mar Futurity and Gr.1 Norfolk Stakes as well as a part of his two year old campaign. Baffert has earlier won the San Vicente with The Factor last year and has accomplished a total of seven wins at the seven furlong race.
The Factor has come out strong from his layoffs and his four year old season. His recent win at the San Carlos – Gr.2 race sure projects him as a stronger contender than before. It’s his second consecutive win since Grade 1 Malibu Stakes in December last season.
Castaway is another horse Baffert would be contemplating projecting for the Derby trail, especially after the colt’s impressive win at the Southwest Stakes simultaneously with Secret Circle though in a different race. This was Castaway’s first foray into graded stakes.
The 3yo bay filly, Eden’s Moon will also mark a solid season for Baffert with a win already at the Gr.1 Las Virgenes Stakes. Closely comes Ellafitz that’d be competing in the weekend’s San Margarita Stakes for four year olds and up and looking at the filly’s records and previous wins at the season’s Paseana Handicap and and Gr.2 Santa Maria Stakes, Ellafitz may charge her upcoming races with a solid covering for her winner’s circle dreams.
