Results of a Test of Airway Clearance Devices for Cystic Fibrosis Treatment

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that results in an impaired ability to clear mucus from the lungs. That makes it difficult to clear pathogens, so those with CF may experience chronic pulmonary infections and inflammation.

Airway Clearance Devices are commonly used for Cystic Fibrosis Treatment to clear secretion. With Airway Clearance Devices, percussion is applied over the ribs to stimulate coughing.

Airway Clearance Devices for Cystic Fibrosis Treatment consist of electrical and non-electrical percussors and vibrators. Unfortunately, very little comparative data exists to help inform consumers about their options.

Given the lack of information, on June 27, 2011, Med Systems conducted comparative Pulse Force tests of four Airway Clearance Devices: the Electro Flo® 5000, the Fluid Flo® 2500, the G5 Flimm-Fighter, and the G5 Vibracare.

On the Electro Flo®5000, pulse force was measured as power at the lowest and highest frequency settings. On the Fluid Flo® 2500, it was measured as peak pulse power while ...
... for the other Airway Clearance Devices, it was measured as power at each setting.

Our tests indicate that both the Electro Flo® 5000 and the Fluid Flo®2500 Airway Clearance Devices provide significantly more pulse force than the G5 Flimm-Fighter or the G5 Vibracare which is an important consideration for treating Cystic Fibrosis.

The strongest Airway Clearance Device, the Electro Flo® 5000, could reach up to 35 lbs of pulse force compared to 19.0 lbs for the Fluid Flo® 2500 the maximum of 13.75 lbs for the Flimm-Fighter or 11.75 lbs for the Vibracare.

“As a therapy for Cystic Fibrosis, think of the Electro Flo® 5000 like a jackhammer,” says Med Systems President, Susan B. Davis. “Although it can deliver gentle tapping like the other Cystic Fibrosis treatment products, its range far exceeds that of other Cystic Fibrosis Therapy instruments.”

In addition, the Electro Flo® 5000 Airway Clearance Device with Force Multiplying Technology provides 25 targeted settings so power and frequency can be precisely directed to individual lobes of the lungs.

For these reasons, the Electro Flo® 5000 Airway Clearance Device is considered to offer the most powerful Chest Physical Therapy available for Cystic Fibrosis Treatment.
