The Rise Of Korean Car Brands In Western Markets
Time was when the entry of Asian brands into the global automotive market was met with a lot of skepticism. It was, after all, a European named Karl Benz who introduced the first modern car in the mid-1880s. Within a span of 30 years, an American company, Ford, became the world’s largest carmaker after adapting moving assembly lines in its production process. Meanwhile, in Japan, manufacturers started adapting car designs that were based on the most popular European and American models. However, these vehicles were sold only in their local markets.
During the 1970s, the Japanese demand started growing very fast and manufacturers like Mitsubishi, Toyota, and Nissan had gained enough experience and confidence to offer their cars to foreign markets. This bold move eventually paved the way for other Asian carmakers who wanted to also develop their own vehicles and enter the global market.

... slow yet steady advance on western markets, the Japanese had no other choice except to yield part of that market share to players from South Korea, China, and India.
Fast forward to more than a decade later, the Koreans have proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the auto industry. The Hyundai Motor Group, along with its “little brother” Kia Motors, leads the campaign to claim a place in the global automotive market.
Today, Korean brands have become two of the most popular brands even with Indianapolis used car dealers. One particular brand was recently chosen as the 2012 North American Car of the Year. This compact, four-door sedan also joins 5 other current Korean models named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) among the Top Safety Picks for 2012.
If, a decade ago, their name symbolized cheap materials and poor build quality, Korean brand emblems today stand for great cars with the best value for money.
