Superbly close, very reminiscent of the two year old fillies’ competitiveness, all three top contenders have shown similar if not completely comparable contention for the Eclipse Older Female Championship. Havre de Grace, Blind Luck rivalry is now an aging reality while Awesome Maria has consistently stayed in the picture making the competition even more duelling.
A quick recap of their respective winning ledgers and we should have a winner. Sounds simple?
Awesome Maria has a strong contention here; trained by Todd Pletcher and raced by John Velasquez, she started in 2011 in 4 races, winning all of them. Period.
In no race this year, did Awesome Maria compete against Havre de Grace so a confusion could arise out of who was better in a race, competing in one Grade 1 event, a Grade 2 race and two Grade 3 races, Awesome Maria has established her hold for a finalists place.

Her last start last season happened at Lady’s Secret Stakes, where she started trailing mid pack and ended dead last. Blind Luck is a Jerry Hollendorfer contender, raced by Garrett Gomez.
Havre de Grace by far has the maximum number of wins this season of four year old campaign. Starting 7 times, she won 5 of them finishing 6 in the money. Apart from winning the Azeri Stakes against her prime rival Blind Luck, Havre de Grace won the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap soon followed by Grade 3 Obeah Stakes. After losing the Delaware to vengeance, she asserted her prominence as a female champion race horse winning the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes against older male horses, Flat Out and Rule. Her farewell 2011 race happened to be the Breeder’s Cup Classic against the stronger males; Havre de Grace proudly finished fourth within 3 lengths of the race lead, Drosselmeyer. Incredible finish to her four year old racing season.
So while you guess, let me tell you, I’ve voted for Havre de Grace. She is by far one of the most impressive race horses for the season, closely followed by Blind Luck. Trained by Larry Jones, and raced by Ramon Dominquez, Havre de Grace could very easily steer clear of this competition.
