As one of the foundations of western society the area around Jerusalem in what is now Israel is of immense importance. Both the Jews and the Christians regard Jerusalem as being of immense significance to their faith. In addition the third major monotheistic religion also regards Jerusalem as of immense importance.

Historically of course it is important as well. Although the religious center moved to Rome the Birth Place as well as the site of the Sepulchre of Jesus are major religious attractions and are presided over by three major Christian sects (Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox) The Romans occupied Israel for many hundreds of years and ordered the Diasopra which was in the 2nd century AD

The reason for the potted history lesson is to point out the importance and significance of Israel.

When visiting Israel, whether as a pilgrim, wishing to visit the holy sites or as a businessman or as a normal tourist wishing to do the sightseeing that tourists do as well as experience the sights and some of the nightlife then one needs to plan how one is to get around. Many of the places are easily accessible using public transport, but many aren't or are only at great inconvenience.

Many tourists book bus tours which will take you from the Ben Gurion Airport to your Hotel, to Bethlehem, to Temple mount and of course to the tourist trap type souvenir shops which abound in these places.

It is much more convenient to rent a car. Car Rental Israel is not nearly as daunting as one may fear. For a start a small air conditioned car can be picked up at Ben Gurion for as little as $15 a day and suddenly you are at leisure to where you want in reasonable luxury. Your time table become your own and you do not have to climb on a coach at a set hour, Follow a tour guide at each of the sites until you are given a bit of leisure time which is usually at the souvenir shop locations.

Israel is not large and one can easily travel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, to Bethlehem and to the Dead Sea and then on to Eilat on the Red Sea in the South with little let or hindrance. You are advised to exercise caution if you wish to travel near Gaza or the West Bank and be aware that some of the settlements in the Occupied territories are disputed.

But if you are visiting Israel car rental Israel is the way to go.
