The Chrysler Grand Voyager has two engine options: the 3.8L V6 petrol engine and the 2.8L CRD turbo diesel. Both are brilliant, and that doesn't make things any easier. As a question it's one of the most difficult to answer, like "money or fame" and "dogs or cats”: there's just no straight answer. It’s difficult because there are good reasons to go for both. Usually the only advice you'll hear is: diesel cars are cheaper to run, petrol cars are quicker. On a basic level that's true, even in the Grand Voyager, but there is a lot more that you need to take into consideration.
The 2.8L CRD turbo diesel engine produces 120 kW and 360 N.m of torque, so it’s definitely no slouch. Of course it can't quite match its petrol big brother when it comes to speed but it's got that extra little kick of power when you really need it. The turbocharger gets working when you need a little bit more from the car, so overtaking is a lot smoother and safer. The big draw of the diesel is always going to be fuel efficiency, but you already knew that.
Adapting to a diesel might take you a little while, especially if you are used to ...
... driving a petrol-engine car. But don’t worry; modern diesels are now much more advanced than the older, sluggish engines. Diesel cars can no longer be considered inferior thanks to advances Chrysler have made in engine technology.
The 3.8L petrol produces 142 kW and 305 N.m of torque. There’s no doubt that driving a petrol car is just a little bit more fun than a diesel. The pace is a slightly quicker and more responsive. The advantage is that for a minivan, the Grand Voyager actually handles very well and feels quite tight and compact for such a large car.
The petrol version is especially enjoyable on the road, but whichever engine you choose, you know can drive with confidence. They both come with a six-speed transition that allows for a smooth and comfortable ride. Petrol or diesel, it’s still going to be a Grand Voyager, and that’s what really matters.
