There are countless studies that demonstrate the many health benefits of grape seed extract. The extract is believed to contribute to aging, as well as the development of a number of health problems, including heart disease and cancer.

Antioxidants
Vitamin E is an important antioxidant in grape seed, but even more powerful are the flavonoids called oligomeric proanthocyanidin complexes, or OPCs, according to the UMMC. Antioxidants destroy free radicals, which are waste products that develop from the conversion of food to energy and also occur in response to environmental toxins. Free radicals can damage cells and genetic material and may contribute to aging and disease, including heart disease and cancer.

Cardiovascular Heart Health
Studies suggest grape seed may help improve blood circulation, prevent atherosclerosis (clogging of the arteries), lower blood pressure and improve blood cholesterol levels. Some research shows that consumption of grape seed and grape skin in combination, such as in red wine, grape juice or a commercially available vitamin supplement products, may be more beneficial than ...
... grape seed alone. Further research is needed.

Lessen allergy symptoms
As a natural antihistamine, grape seed extract may help to control the sneezing, congestion and other hallmarks of an allergic reaction. The extract also inhibits the release of chemicals called prostaglandins that can generate inflammation during an allergic response. Working in concert, the nutrient's antihistamine and anti-inflammatory actions can help to keep at bay such allergic responses as hives, hay fever and eczema.

Cancer
There are initial studies that show that grape seed extract may aid in the prevention of breast, colon, lung, prostate, and stomach cancer cell growth but further studies have to be undertaken to give light on its effectiveness. Again, the antioxidants in grape seed extracts are strongly linked to the reduction of cancer growth. It has also shown to be very helpful in protecting human liver cells that are vulnerable during chemotherapy. A pharmacist or doctor should be consulted before taking antioxidants with chemotherapy medications to ensure that both of them don’t disrupt each others effects.

Radioprotective Effects
Grape Seed Extract (92% proanthocyanidins) was found to be more radioactive protective against chromosomal damage induced by X-rays, compared to rutin, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ascorbic acid, 6- n-propyl-2-thiouracil-6c (PTU), and diosmin. This may be due to the antioxidant property of Grape Seed Extract and its ability to scavenge free radicals.

Interactions
If you take any medicines regularly, talk to your doctor before you start using grape seed extract. It could interact with drugs like blood thinners, NSAID painkillers (like aspirin, Advil, and Aleve), certain heart medicines, cancer treatments, and others.
