Performing Teeth Whitening At Home

A lot of people go to the dentist to get their teeth whitening procedures done. The dentist has all of the proper equipment in their office to perform these procedures and some dentists even have lasers to help them remove tough stains or discoloration. Dentists can tell if the enamel of your teeth is suffering from the procedures and can recommend the frequency in which you can have them done.
However, it can also be very expensive to have these procedures performed by a dentist and most dental insurance policies do not cover the bleaching or stain removal as these are purely cosmetic procedures. This means the majority of us that have average incomes cannot justify the cost of having the procedure done at the dentist office. At one time this meant that we just did not get the stains removed from our teeth. We brushed and we flossed and we considered that to be all we could do.
Some people tried teeth whitening activities at home like using strawberries and baking soda to remove the stains and residue from their teeth. The strawberries contain an acid that is supposed to help remove tough stains from the teeth ...
... and baking soda is known to be an excellent cleanser for all types of things. Baking soda when applied to stains on some articles of clothing and some other materials can remove the stains without scratching the surface of the material or causing damage.
In the days before teeth whitening gel was readily available to anyone that wanted to buy it many people brushed their teeth with salt to help to remove stains. Salt tastes rather bad but it is an excellent cleanser and can remove some of the stains that people get on their teeth from the foods they eat and activities like smoking cigarettes. You had to be tough to use the salt for this purpose.
Prior to the invention of the teeth whitening gel for home use people would rinse their mouths with peroxide to help and remove some of the residue and build up that caused their tooth enamel to become stained. The peroxide will kill many harmful germs in your mouth and is included in many of the commercial dental care products because it is a powerful cleaner. It does have a powerful taste as well and you have to hold the foaming substance in your mouth for quite some time in order for you to see any results from the product.
Another popular method of attempting to bleach the stains from the tooth enamel was the use of lemon juice or white vinegar. Both of these substances will bleach stains from different materials but while neither of them will actually kill you, they will both cause erosion of the enamel coating on your teeth so they are not wise choices for cleaning with. You would be much better off using the peroxide and baking soda combination. It is a good thing that technology has provided us with easier means of removing the stains on our teeth.
