As the season approaches its winter break with some great horses being retired and taken off the fields, Hall of Famer, jockey Patrick Valenzuela announced his retirement from the profile after an incredible journey of 4,333 wins from a staggering 28 thousand starts, with more than four thousand second place finishes and three and a half thousand, thirds. Ranked 19 amongst the top jockeys around the globe, Pat was a Kentucky Derby winner in addition to his seven Breeder’s Cup victories and several graded stakes wins.
Here’s a brief summary of what his exceptional career looked like.
Pat very much inherited all his racing skills right through his birth in 1962 which happened to be in a family thriving with four jockeys. Kick starting his never ending array of thousands of wins, Pat won hi first official race at the Sunland Park in Mexico at 16 years of age. At 18, he had already become the youngest ever jockey to win a Santa Anita Derby, and also came to be awarded the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award for 1982.
Pat’s first most important winning came aboard Sunday Silence during the 1989 Triple Crown. ...
... Renowned for their aggressive rivalry, Easy Goer came around every single time, up against Sunday Silence with magnificent determination giving it a thorough run for the money. However, he had failed. After winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown, Pat on Sunday had hoped for the red roses but Easy Goer eventually succeeded and demolished this team’s chances.
His other remarkable victory followed in 1991, when he rode Arazi to victory in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile. He also accomplished the feat of winning two Breeder’s Cup races from the same card and becoming the first ever jockey to do so. However substance abuse ensued jeopardizing his racing career.
The riding streak soon experienced a stumble and Pat was suspended from the sports for nearly a few years, well approximately; until he made his comeback in 2003-2004. He once again established himself as a reputed first class jockey with his Breeder’s Cup Distaff victory in 2003, Del mar Breeder’s Cup Mile and Hollywood Gold Cup wins.
Even though Pat kept slipping back to his old lifestyle and swinging back and forth his substance abuse habits, his tempestuous career lined up great victories with a staggering count for four thousand and more races, good enough to rank him high among the top most. With a career earnings of $164 millions approximately, Pat is all set for a career post retirement as an active jockey. His recent gall bladder surgery, weight issues and knee problems have been the reasons behind the decision.
However, his most important rides, Sunday Silence and others, Arazi and Lava Man, all await to be ridden by true racing enthusiasts right here on our fingertips.
