Is Mango Seed Extract Helpful In Weight Loss
When people search natural ways to lose weight, fruit extracts are contained in their list of plans. Some evidence exists that eating extracts from mango seeds may help you shed pounds.
Irvingia gabonensis, also known as "African mango" or "bush mango," is a staple in Nigerian and Cameroonian cuisine. According to a study published in the journal "Lipids in Health and Disease," it's rich in fiber, protein and antioxidants and may help to inhibit the formation of fat cells and affect other weight-related factors such as blood glucose levels.
Many studies have been conducted regarding mango extract and its potential to stimulate weight loss. "The Brisbane Times" published an article in 2009 titled "Mango: weight loss wonder fruit?" It reported that a study administered at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon found participants ingesting mango were able to shed pounds without dieting.
The examination featured 102 overweight adults who were randomly assigned to take either mango or a placebo twice a day for 10 weeks. The individuals were ordered to maintain their normal lifestyles. When the study concluded, ...
... the group consuming mango extract lost an average of approximately 28 pounds. Conversely, the participants who took a placebo shed virtually no weight.
In research published in the journal "Lipids in Health and Disease," in 2008, 102 healthy participants who were overweight or obese were divided into two groups. One group took 150 mg of an extract from the seeds of the irvingia fruit, IGOB131, 30 to 60 minutes before lunch and dinner, while the other group took 150 mg of a placebo on the same schedule.
The group that took the mango seed extract experienced significant reductions in body fat, body weight and waist circumference compared to the placebo group. The mango seed extract group also gained improvements in their blood glucose, LDL cholesterol and total blood cholesterol levels.
In general, the mango seed extract was well-tolerated, but, a few participants experienced side effects such as headaches, problems sleeping and abdominal gas. However, the researchers point out that the occurrence of these side effects were similar to those in the placebo group.
Despite the positive results suggest that irvingia may enhance your ability to lose weight, more research is needed. Also, dietary supplements do not undergo the same rigorous regulation as over-the-counter or prescription products, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Also, supplements do not provide the overall health benefits of exercising, such as improved cardiovascular and bone health.
So before taking mango seed extract to lose weight, you should consult with your doctor to ensure safety.
