It is vital for schools to posses certain kinds of first aid equipment. After all, when emergencies unfold, it is sometimes necessary for individuals to receive immediate assistance.

Indeed, one incident highlighted this need all too clearly. The best friend of Aylish Doherty suffered a heart attack while in year 11 of Little Lever School, This Is Lancashire reports. However, thanks to the quick thinking of staff at the educational institution, she was successfully resuscitated and is now studying at Bolton College.

Aylish was moved by the incident and has used her initiative to help ensure that if similar events were to happen in future, the school is even better equipped. She wrote to the Hands On Heart campaign, which aims to get defibrillators into as many schools as possible. It has now given the school the life-saving machine.

She remarked: "It is so important for schools and organisations to have this equipment. I am pleased Little Lever has this, especially because my brothers go to the school."

Meanwhile, commenting on her friend's actions, Alice remarked: "Aylish did not tell me what she ...
... had done - I think it is brilliant." She added: "Defibrillators need to be in easy reach of everyone."

Recently, Aylish returned to her former school to see the emergency equipment get handed over in a presentation to staff and pupils.

In total, six staff members at the school will be trained in the use of the equipment and the same number of pupils will be trained in first-aid.

English teacher Jeanette Robinson, who was responsible for saving Alice, said: "I was terrified when I was called to help Alice, but I had learned first-aid at school and went into autopilot - I did what I had learned. I am so delighted that Alice was okay and went on to do well in her GCSEs."

Meanwhile, Aylish's dad Christopher works with organisations that teach first aid and he noted that defibrillators are important pieces of equipment.
